Global Tiger Day!

Global Tiger Day!

Maha Media, 29 July 29

The world is observing Global Tiger Day! Established in 2010 at Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit, July 29th is dedicated to worldwide awareness and support for tiger conservation. Less than a century ago, 100,000 tigers roamed the forests of Asia, but today’s reality is that there are only 4000 tigers are surviving in their natural environment. India is currently home to nearly 3000 tigers marking a 33% jump in their number from the last census four years ago.

According to the fourth round of tiger census, there are currently 2967 tigers in India in 2018 as against 2226 in 2014. This means an increase of 741 tigers in the last four years because of the conservation initiatives taken by the Centre and state governments. Compared to 2006 when the scientific method of tiger counting began, the numbers doubled – from 1411 in 2006.

Since 2006, India has been conducting the all India tiger estimation once every four years. Three cycles of the estimation have already been completed in 2006, 2010 and 2014. In the previous census, Karnataka (406) housed the maximum number of big cats followed by Uttarakhand (340) and Madhya Pradesh (308).

Though India launched Project Tiger in 1973, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) was set up only in 2006. It came as a response to the drastic fall in tiger numbers as highlighted by the local extinction of tigers in Sariska and Panna Tiger reserves. With the primary issues of poaching, habitat destruction and man-animal conflict, the future of India’s iconic Big Cat remains a matter of great concern.

Apart from tackling the serious issue of poaching and trade in tiger parts, one of the main issue that require immediate attention in regard to tiger conservation is the fragmentation, degradation and shrinking of  habitat. A rise in the encroachments into protected areas, deforestation and conversion of buffer zones into farmland are dangerous for tiger’s life. It resulted in shrinking of sizes of tiger reserves.

Despite Maharashtra not having the highest tiger population in the country, the state has recorded the maximum tiger deaths plus body parts seizures this year so far. Today India has almost twice the number of tigers than it did a decade ago; however, the threats to India’s big cats remain as potent as ever. India’s reported tiger deaths related to poaching peaked in 2016, according to World Wildlife Fund-India. There were 50 poaching-related deaths in 2016, according to the Wildlife Protection Society of India, the highest in 15 years.

Those who study English literature must be knowing British poet William Blake’s famous poem on tiger ----

Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the Forests of the Night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

Poet, painter and visionary William Blake worked to bring about a change both in the social order and in the minds of men. Blake wrote this poem in 1774, there were around 100 thousand tigers roaming this planet in the Nature. In the second line, the poet writes about, ‘Forest of the Night’ which is the home of the tiger. There were hardly one billion people on the planet and there was no Global Tiger Day celebration then.

Today Madhya Pradesh was declared to be number one state having number of tigers leaving behind Karnataka. Congratulations to Forest and Wildlife department of Madhya Pradesh and also to the PCCF (wildlife) Dr. U Prakasham and his team.

Mob lynching an epidemic in our society!

Mob lynching an epidemic in our society!
Maha Media News Services
27 July 2019
Mob lynching has become an epidemic in our society and we can't ignore it now.  It is the duty of Central, as well as state governments to prevent such incidents. No one has right to take law in their hands and beat someone to death just in name of suspect of slaughtering-cow. Similarly, one can not be forced to say ‘Jai Shri Ram’ or other religious slogans for that matter. The increasing number of incidents of mob-lynching by fanatic people has become a matter of serious concern for all of us.
The Supreme Court on Friday sought responses from the Centre and all major states on a PIL seeking to fix accountability on them with regard to the implementation of the apex court's July 17, 2018 judgment laying down guidelines for police to prevent incidents of mob-lynching by cow vigilante groups.

The Supreme Court had slammed frequent mob lynching incidents and asked the governments to discharge their constitutional duty of maintaining law and order to ensure peace and preserve secular culture of our pluralistic society.
No doubt, cow and name of Lord Rama are sacred to many in the majority community of India. Because of dirty politics, ‘Jai Shri Ram’ has become a provocative war-cry today. We cannot deny the fact that over 254 religious identity-based hate crimes were reported between January 1, 2009 and October 29, 2018.
Recently, expressing serious concern over rising incidents of mob lynching, a delegation of 49 artists, social activists and filmmakers signed an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded strict action (non-bailable, exemplary punishment) against those who found guilty of the crime.
To counter this, another delegation (comprising 62 members) of Bollywood also signed a letter and termed the previous delegation’s letter and their demand as ‘Selective Outrage and False Narratives’. Interestingly, the Bollywood delegation comprised of well-known personalities like CBFC chief  Prasoon Joshi, actor Kangana Ranaut, classical dancer Sonal Manshingh etc. It is clear that our artists, social activists and filmmakers are also divided on the issue. It seems that it is BJP versus non-BJP. And instead of paying attention to the core issue these social heroes are fighting for their ideology.
Saying ‘Jai Shri Ram’ is a matter of faith. Ordinarily, this is a recognized form of greeting, particularly in North India. No one has rights to force someone to say or chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’. In fact, ‘Jai Shri Ram’ is increasingly being used with a new aggression for political purpose these days.
Let be the chanting or saying ‘Jai Shri Ram’ a matter of faith and our lawmakers must understand this. Those who misuse the name of Rama just to get political advantage should read Tualasidas’ description of ‘Ram Rajya’, -who says  --
(Daihik, devik, bhautik tapa, Ram Rajya kahuhi nahin vayapa,
sab nar karhin paraspar preeti,  chalahin svadharmanirat shruti riti)
(Nowhere in Ram Rajya could one fine a person who suffered from physical pain, spiritual or material disability, everyone lives with love and harmony and each follows their religion peacefully).
Therefore, it is important to condemn such incidents of mob lynching, not only for a violation of the law, but because it would hurt the sentiments of real Ram bhaktas and would bring disrespect to the Lord Rama.
We should also know that only making laws strict will not be sufficient. Every one knows that murder may punish a person with death sentence. But still large number of murders are done every year. People know that Indial Penal Code exists and there are provision of imprisonment for every crime, still thousands of crime are committed every day. We need to create coherence-sattwa in collective consciousness of the society, where only Satoguna prevents. No negativity emerges from any mind and heart. His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi ji has given a scientifically proven Vedic Technology to prevent such mob negativity. Governments should adopt such techniques and prevent the mob lynching.

20th Anniversary of Kargil Vijay War

20th Anniversary of Kargil Vijay War

Maha Media News Services 26 July 2019

We sleep soundly and remain safe because our soldiers on border are alert and awake. Today on 26 July 2019, India is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the victory of the Indian Armed Forces in Operation Vijay against the infiltrating Pakistani troops.

The anniversary is observed as Kargil Vijay Diwas each year across the country to show respect and gratitude to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives to re-capture all positions that had been seized by Pakistan Army.
On this date in 1999, India successfully took command of the high outposts which had been occupied by Pakistan. The Kargil War was fought for more than 60 days, ended on 26 July and resulted in loss of life on both the sides. According to report, this war led to 527 deaths on India’s side.
No doubt, the Kargil was a unique instance of two nuclear-capable countries facing each other off in a conventional warfare. In the end, the then Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Shariff managed to get the US to intervene diplomatically so as to ensure an absolute end to the conflict.
The present reality is that Pakistan has not learnt any lesson from Kargil War and still believes that any tension in the region would internationalize the Kashmir issue, helping it to secure a speedy resolution. Instead of controlling militants training camp operating on its soil, Pakistan leaves no stone unturned to internationalize Kashmir issue.
But in his recent visit to America, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan made shocking revelation that there are still 30,000 to 40,000 terrorists on Pakistan soil who had fought in Afghanistan and Kashmir. He also came clean that his previous government deceived the US on the issue. “Blaming on then Nawaz Shariff government, Imarn said, “Pakistan did not tell the US exactly the truth on this ground”.
No doubt, It is Imran’s credit that he has accepted that Pakistan shelters terrorists on its soil. Imran’s statement is quite contradicting Pakistan’s traditional stand that it only provides morale and diplomatic support to Kashmiri militants. On other hand, India has always maintained that terrorism in Kashmir is sustained from across the border. Terrorism or war is not solution to resolve any conflict. However, on the 20th anniversary of Kargil Diwas, we must pay tribute to our brave soldiers.

The fall of Karnataka’s JD (S)-Cong govt

The fall of Karnataka’s JD (S)-Cong govt
Finally, the chaotic tenure of Karnataka’s JD (S)-Congress government, led by HD Kumaraswamy, came to an end on Tuesday, exactly 14 months after it assumed office. The chief minister HD Kumawaraswamy lost the trust vote by 99-105 and this brought down the curtain on 18-day high political drama in Karnataka. The state assembly has been in commotion since the new house was elected in May 2018. Though BJP emerged as the single-largest party, Congress and JD (S) joined hands to form a coalition government. The ruling alliance was stable and the crisis erupted after Lok Sabha election results on May 23 this year.
The current political situation will pave the way for BJP to form the government under the leadership of BS Yeddyurappa, While HD Kumawaraswamy said he tried his best to win trust motion, but some of his MLA friends ditched him, on other hand, BS Yeddyurappa termed this entire political development as victory of democracy .Yeddyurappa even said that the people of Karnataka were fed up with the JD (S)-Congress government.
Will this recent political development in Karnataka cast its shadow over the government in Madhya Pradesh?  There is no doubt;
the road ahead for Kamal Nath led Congress government in Madhya Pradesh is likely to be uneven. Congress came to power in Madhya Pradesh in December last year, riding a half-hearted mandate. The Congress won 114 seats in a House of 230, a slim lead over BJP which bagged 108 seats.  The Congress was helped by four independents, two BSP legislators and one Samajwadi Party MLA in forming the government. The debacle in the Lok Sabha elections put a dark shadow on present Madhya Pradesh government’s survival. Congress had lost 28 out of 29 seats in the Lok Sabha election in Madhya Pradesh. . The Congress leaders in Madhya Pradesh have also realised that the slender majority is no guarantee for survival. Recently, Veteran BJP leader of Uttar Pradesh Lalji Tondon has been appointed the Governor of Madhya Pradesh. This development also adds fuel to speculations!
It seems, the nature also takes its own course. The saying “as you sow, so shall you reap” applies to all these parties. But still they don’t learn and keep on playing “dirty politics”.

Where there's a will there's a way

Where there's a will there's a way… Motivational Story
Where there's a will there's a way is a proverb that means if someone is determined to do something, he/she will find a way to accomplish it regardless of obstacles.
Kathleen Marie takes lesson from her Malaylam teacher
There is no age bar for education or to learn language, especially foreign language or other than mother tongue. We have two recent examples of self-motivated people —1. Kathleen Marie Huolohan, an Australian citizen who, at the age of 80, decided to learn Malayalam language. She is determined to learn it and has started taking lessons at the Continuing Education Center, a programme launched by Kerala Literacy Mission at Ernakulam.
And second example is of Ramjal Meena, who is working at Delhi University as security guard, has cracked the entrance examination to study Russian in the BA (Hons) programme at the prestigious institute. The 34-year-old Meena is son of a daily wager and a father of three girls. He is a native of Rajasthan's Karauli district and a first generation learner from his village.
Kathleen Marie’s is the first foreign national to be enrolled as a student for this four-month course of Malayalam language.
Love for beauty of Kerala and Malayalam language --
Kathleen, who retired as nurse, developed passion for Malayalam language three years ago when she came to India and visited Kerala along with a Buddhist group. She had fallen in love with the natural beauty of Kerala and its language. At present, she is taking lesson from her Malayalam teacher K B Rajeev, who works as prerak (teacher) with the Kerala Literacy Mission.  According to Kathleen she had came to Kerala for Ayurvedic treatment. But more than the treatment, she fell in love with the beauty of Kerala. It was an instant spiritual connection that she had with the place. She kept visiting Kerala and during such visit, she got acquainted with Rajeev and expressed her desire to learn Malayalam.
According to Rajeev, since she is on a tourist visa, she can only stay in the country for three months. However, he is very much impressed with the speed with which Kathleen has picked up the alphabets.  She can now read small words from the textbook. Even she has started speaking little sentences with locals in Malayalam. Now her teacher is planning to seek special permission from the Literacy Mission authorities to allow her to write the test earlier than prescribed. Kathleen has a son who lives in Singapore.

A first generation learner from his village–
Son of a daily wager and a father of three girls, 34-year-old Meena is a native of Rajasthan's Karauli district and a first generation learner from his village. He attended a government school in his village Bhajera but had to discontinue his studies due to his family conditions. Last year, he completed his graduation in Political Science, History and Hindi via distance learning mode from Rajasthan University.
Ramjal Meena, a security guard who cracks entrance exam to learn Russian language.

The reason he chose to study a foreign language was that he wanted to see places. “I have heard those who study foreign languages get to visit foreign countries. Moreover, He wants to try his luck in civil services, too.

Water in Vedic literature
