Chandrayaan-2: No need to get disappointed, we are proud of you!

Chandrayaan-2: No need to get disappointed, we are proud of you!

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO's) Chandrayaan-2 mission suffered a setback, when Vikram -the Lander lost communication with ground stations while attempting to do a soft-landing on the Moon’s surface at an altitude of 2.1 km early on Saturday morning. The gloom at the mission centre in Bengaluru spoke volumes indicating failure. There could be any number of reasons, including sensor failure, on-board software anomaly and thrust deviation, for the loss of communication. Former ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair said the Chandrayaan-2 has achieved 95 per cent of its mission objectives, the lander’s unsuccessful bid to touch-down on the Lunar surface notwithstanding.
The mission that started from July 22 with the launch of the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft achieved one milestone after another in a phased manner.  However, the Vikram module, named after great scientist late Vikram Sarabhai, lost contact minutes before the crucial touchdown on the lunar surface in the early hours of Saturday.
The landing module, which was supposed to carry out various tests on the lunar soil, completed the rough braking phase as planned and entered the phase of fine braking phase till the altitude of 2.1 km.  But during the last stage of the crucial Chandrayaan-2 mission, a snag occurred, where the communication link between the moon lander (Vikram) and the orbiter snapped leading to some tense moments and throwing some suspense over the mission’s fate.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had flown down to Bengaluru to see the Lander’s descent on the Moon, and sat in the visitors’ gallery at ISRO’s Telemetry Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) Centre.  Later, addressing the ISRO scientists, PM Modi said “There are ups and downs in life. This is not a small achievement. The nation is proud of you. Hope for the best. I congratulate you. You all have done a big service to the nation, science and mankind.” He further said “India is proud of our scientists! They’ve given their best and have always made India proud. He called ISRO an “encyclopaedia of successes” and said a few moments of halt cannot push its flight “out of trajectory” and that no hindrance can stop India from realising its dreams and aspiration in the 21st century.”
